Tonight a group of us went to see The Imaginarium of Dr Parnassus, written (with Charles McKeown) and directed by Terry Gilliam (formerly of Monty Python).

The general consensus was that it was well worth seeing (unlike some reviews I'd seen). I enjoyed it more than some other Terry Gilliam directed movies (eg, Twelve Monkeys, or Fear & Loathing in Las Vegas) and thought the fantasy element of it worked well (cf, eg, some Tim Burton movies like Sleepy Hollow). There were shades of "Better Than Life" (of Red Dwarf to the Imaganirum, and this aspect plays an important part in the plot (as it does in Red Dwarf).

The choice to have three actors playing one of the parts (Jonny Depp, Jude Law and Colin Farrell) also worked quite well. When I originally heard they were doing that, I was thinking Dr Who (wikipedia) like transformations, but the result is more "different sides of the same person" and with suitable makeup all three end up looking relatively similar (although distinct). And Lily Cole looks to be an actress to keep an eye on in future; she did well and looks set for a long career (since she's only 21 at present).
