Recent Projects

Designed and implemented a graphical sonar echogram viewing, manipulation, and printing application for NIWA. The program was implemented in C++ for a Unix/Linux environment, using the GTK+, and GTK--, X11 graphical libraries. It generated postscript files to permit printing whole echograms or portions of echograms.
More recent enhancements permit identifying the location of the bottom (automatically and manually), selecting displayed regions to perform calculations, and an interface to a revision control system for storage of defined areas. Also added a basic scripting engine to automate control of the software.
Installed online job-site www.laceylee.co.nz. Enhanced perl backend to website to give more flexibility in display of jobs, and use of site including the ability to store search criteria for later searches.
Planned and implemented network infrastructure for iMatix Corporation (Belgium), including installation of network cabling, and Linux servers to contain source repository, web, mail and ftp services. Installed Linux firewall to isolate internal network.
Worked in team of two to implement Apache/mod-perl database backed website for mp3.net.nz (an online repository of New Zealand music in mp3 audio format)
Enhanced and implemented web-based vote recording and distribution system for the 1999 New Zealand General Election.
Designed and implemented Word97 to HTML conversion of legal contracts.
Set up Linux-based mail server, and Internet gateway.

Feb 2000	--	Present	Te Papa Tongarewa/The Museum of New Zeland
		Unix System Administrator: Provided Unix System Administration consulting support for a network of unix servers supporting back of house functionality as well as public visible front of house systems. Managed backups, and routine maintenance, of Solaris, OpenBSD, and HPUX systems pending appointment of a permanent replacement Unix System Administrator.

Jan 1998	--	Present	Catalyst IT Ltd
		Technical Consultant: Programmer, Network Administrator and Unix System Administrator. Installed and maintained network of (Debian) Linux and Unixware 7 servers to provide Catalyst's presence on the Internet. Planned and implemented firewalling policy. Administration, including DNS, DHCP, Mail, News, File Sharing (SAMBA, NFS), of hetrogeneous network of computers (Linux, Unixware 7, Windows NT, Windows 95, Windows 3.1, OS/2).

Oct 1997	--	Present	iMatix Corporation
		Technical Consultant: Development and support of iMatix products (see http://www.imatix.com/) including Xitami (a portable webserver written in C), support libraries (SFL, and SMT), add ons (including a Java Servlet runner, and LRWP support). Developed custom Intranet applications (in perl and python) for iMatix clients, including enhanced search tools. Supported iMatix internal network of Linux servers.

May 1999	--	Sep 2000	NIWA
		Contractor: (Through Catalyst IT, in a series of development phases.) Designed and implemented sonar echogram viewer for Unix in C++, using the GTK+, and GTK--, X11 display libraries. Designed and implemented efficient Postscript echogram output module to improve printing performance and flexibility. Assisted with, and managed, further enhancements to allow analysis of selected areas, control application through scripts, etc.

Feb 2000	--	May 2000	CyberElves
		Perl Programmer: Designed and developed a content management system for the online music store, www.mp3.net.nz, including the ability to manage previews and descriptions of artists and music. Implemented back end control system in Apache/mod-perl using a PostgreSQL database, with assistance of CyberElves staff. Wrote interface to online credit validation system to allow for online purchasing. Performed initial install of application onto Linux servers.

Sep 1999	--	Nov 1999	Chief Electoral Office
		Programmer, System Administrator: Enhanced web-based (Progress/Webspeed) vote recording and distribution system (to media, and public web pages). Implemented system (Progress v8 under Unixware 7 on IBM Netfinity machines), with fail over support, for full dress rehearsal, and then on election night. Provided technical assistance to third parties interfacing with the system, and for network of PCs used for data entry/display at the election results centre.
